Today I read an interesting article at Reuters. The article mentions the fact that Type 2 diabetes is more common among children in the US that are being treated with growth hormones then it is among children who aren’t treated with these hormones. This is proven by a new study done by researchers based at the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.

Reuters Health was told by Dr. Christopher Child that he wasn’t surprised when he learned that children who took growth hormones were more likely to develop diabetes. The company had already done a study around this subject in 2000.

Growth hormone is known to interfere with the activity of insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. It’s unclear whether the growth hormone treatment itself is responsible for the higher diabetes risk seen in the kids, however.
