Diabetes is a disease that has no cure yet, asides organ transplant (applicable to type 1). Let’s do a little bit of biology! It is important to know the etiology of what we are dealing with.
Diabetes is of two types
* Diabetes insipidus – This is a rare form of diabetes resulting from a deficiency of vasopressin (the pituitary hormone that regulates the kidneys). It is characterized by the chronic excretion of large amounts of pale dilute urine which results in dehydration and extreme thirst.
* Diabetes Mellitus – Its diabetes caused by a relative or absolute deficiency of insulin and characterized by polyuria (excretion of large volume of pale urine)
One thing common to these types is excretion of large amounts of urine. This should tell us something about what should be included in our diets.
Water!!! This is an essential part of our diets that must not be played with. Frequent urination means loss of water which leads to excessive thirst. In fact water should be an integral part of the diet of a diabetic patient.
Pending the time that scientific research ll come up with a cure, diabetic patients will have to live with the condition. A major part of living with it is eating right. Menu planning that applies to the diabetic is also good for the family as a whole; it helps to improve their healthy eating
Ideally a good menu plan will help extend the life of a diabetic patient. That is why it is good to come up with a good menu plan that will balance the carbohydrate in the diet with the protein, and to also have plenty of fresh vegetables and some fresh fruit like fresh bananas. It contains phytonutrients that help control blood sugar.
Each meal should be planned in such a way that it includes a reasonable amount of protein, vitamins and minerals. Vegetables are a very excellent source of these three nutrients.
Diabetic menu planning should be a joint venture that should involve all the members of the family as well as your qualified health practitioner.
