A lot of people feel that, when they are diagnosed with diabetes, they will no longer enjoy flavorful meals. They couldn’t be more wrong. It also doesn’t require adherence to a strict diet with only fruits and vegetables included. In this article you will find a few suggestions that can help you make your diabetic menu more diverse than it ever was.
Tip 1: It is important to make fruits and vegetables a part of your diabetic menu, but they don’t have to become the only part. Apples and oranges are good fruits to include in your diet, as well as carrots, beans and cabbage should be in your top 3 of vegetables. Also vegetables that are high in fiber, but low-starch (i.e. spinach) should be included in your menu.
Tip 2: Keep your foods as natural as possible. Include plenty of whole grains sources instead of high levels of processed foods. As a matter of fact, grains should be the foundation of any good diabetic menu. When possible, make the choice to eat whole wheat spaghetti and brown rice.
Tip 3: Instead of eating large meals several hours apart, learn to eat several smaller meals throughout the day. Eat at regular times so that your metabolism stays working at high levels. This will also prevent your body from storing fat. When you leave a lot of time between meals, your body feels like it’s being starved and will store excess calorie and fat.
Tip 4: Minimize your dairy input. If you want to eat dairy, choose the non-fat products like skimmed milk and non-fat yoghurt. If non-fat isn’t to your liking (yet), choose the low-fat option so your taste buds can adjust.
Tip 5: You should avoid soft drinks and replace them with water. If you are really hooked to the taste of soda and can’t live without, consider switching to a diet version. Most diet drinks do taste just like regular versions.
Tip 6: Put a limit on your desserts. Everyone would love to have a piece of cake or a cookie after dinner, but too many snacks will let you lose control over your weight and your diet. Once a week is good, once a day is not a good idea.
When adapting to your new lifestyle you should try to make these tips a part of your life. Sometimes you might need to sacrifice a thing or two, but the benefits you will gain are well worth everything you are giving up. A diabetic menu that stresses proper food choices and portioned, controlled eating is one that in the end will prove to be very beneficial.
