If you are diagnosed with diabetes and you are looking for a good way to help improve your health and fitness, this diet will be something you could use. It’s a great starter diet that can help out your diabetes management plan. Before you start your diabetic diet menu you should contact your doctor, so he knows what changes you are making in your diet.

When you follow this diet, you will see that your food intake will be divided in 50% starches, 30% proteins and 20% fat. You will also follow the diabetic food pyramid’s method when you are creating your menu. Don’t eat more than those that are mentionned and only eat the amount that is alowed. Remember that you can’t skip meals and you can’t eat in between the meals that are on your schedule. You need to measure everything you eat, this can be done with a standard measuring cup, teaspoon or tablespoon. In general, you will measure your food after it is cooked, this will ensure that you are eating the proper portion size. Don’t fry your meat, but rather bake, broil or boil it. You don’t have to eat special food, you only need to make sure you are sticking to low calorie and lean foods and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Because you have diabetes, you need to exclude sweets and anything that is made with sugar. Foods that are high in fat or cholesterol and alcoholic beverages like beer need to be avoided. If you want to control or maintain your weight you need to avoid fats, sweats, fried foods and foods prepared in sugar or oil.

This means you can have 2/3 of a cup of apple juice, ½ cup of oatmeal, one slice of toast, one egg (soft cooked), one cup of skimmed milk and coffee or tea.

Your lunch will include two meats, two breads, one vegetable, two fruits, two fats and a free food. This translates in something like a half cup of tuna, two slices of bread, a half cup of tomato slices, a cup of mixed fruit, a teaspoon of margarine and tea with lemon.

For your dinner you can have three meats, two breads, one raw vegetable and two fats. An example for a dinner meal is three ounces of baked chicken, half a cup of mashed potatoes, a slice of bread and 1 cup of broccoli or a tossed salad with 1 tablespoon salad dressing.
