Diabetes And Obesity – Is There A DNA Link?

diabetes and obesity

Until this date the reason to cause diabetes is still unknown. We can certainly define risk factors that increase the likelihood of being diagnosed with the condition. The most important risk factor that you can control is your weight. If you are overweight you need to lose weight, it’s the best you can do for your health and the prevention of diabetes. Even if it’s a little at a time, every pound you lose increases your health benefits.

That’s easier said than done, I hear you say. And maybe you’re not that wrong. New studies show that there is a genetic mutation for people who are obese and have diabetes. This genetic malfunction affects the body’s use of energy and insulin which are the two most important elements in the functioning of your body and the cause of diabetes and obesity.

But it is important to remember that the studies show that it’s not a cause and effect case. It’s not because you carry this gene, that you will be obese or have diabetes, but you have to know that the link is there and that it can be prevented. Sure, you will have to work harder than others to maintain a healthy body weight and put off diabetes, but it’s not impossible. Talk to your doctor about what you can do to prevent diabetes.

The researchers that discovered the gene have found it in young children. It scares me to know that young children, still in their preschool years, can be diagnosed with obesity and type 2 diabetes. But we, as parents, can reduce and prevent these things from happening when we give our children a healthy lifestyle. And now that there is a DNA link found, the research can go further into finding a way to prevent or fix this from happening in the future.
